Fast forward 25 years and Phantom has achieved global success, millions of viewers, a film adaptation in and a musical sequel. Now viewers have the chance to experience this phenomenal show right from their own screens. Filmed at the Royal Albert Hall, this stunning performance brings the show to a bigger stage and celebrates its role as one of the biggest shows in theatre history, with speeches, performances and appearances by the original cast and some of the show's most notable Phantoms, including John Owen-Jones and Colm Wilkinson. Shunned by society, the Phantom seeks revenge in cruel and often violent acts. Written by LadyN1. Finally a full staging of my favourite musical and the second longest running one in the U. K is here for the first time on DVD.
Many theatre makers have not been able to work since last March - your support could be a lifeline for those in need now. The Phantom Of The Opera has been making audiences weep, scream and applaud with all their might for over 33 years now. Photo by Dan Wooller. Michael Crawford was the original phantom back in Anecdotally, Michael was offered the part after Andrew Lloyd Webber and his then wife Sarah Brightman arrived early for her singing lesson and happened to overhear the end of the previous students lesson. Intrigued, they tracked down the owner of the voice and called him in for an audition. The rest is musical history!
The Phantom hides beneath the Opera House in a lonely existence, ashamed by his physical appearance. The story tells of the intense love the Phantom holds for Christine and the lengths he will go to obtain her love in return. As soon as the prologue is over the orchestra erupts into the overture. A twenty-seven piece orchestra under the direction of Adam Rowe make the music from this classic ever more impressive. Christine Daae Sofia Escobar excellently displays the vulnerability and desire her character should have in her relationship with the Phantom. Her effortless, classy soprano charms you from the start and although her native Portuguese accent creeps in at times, it is very endearing to the character of Christine.
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the musical, three special performances on Saturday 1 October at 7. For further releases, footage from all three performances were edited together. As a result, the event was planned as a full show. Designing the staged show at the Royal Albert Hall was a daunting task, as the space or lack of was not an easy one to translate a proscenium show into. As a concert hall rather than a theatre, many of the show's elements such as the chandelier, which instead of falling, exploded had to be toned down and simplified: the Royal Albert Hall was simply not capable of accepting a show the size of The Phantom of the Opera , or at least not the full original. The balconies of the hall were used to build uprights to form an opera house proscenium with boxes on each side.
